The 3D-modeling software shaping Singapore's future is straight out of a sci-fi film

When you envision three-dimensional city models that you can navigate, explore and alter in virtual reality, there's a good chance the first thing that comes to mind is a video game, or a sci-fi movie that takes place many years in the future.

These technologies are hardly far-fetched, however. Today, there's real, practical application for such 3D-modeling software — and it's helping shape our cities.

Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform, for example, is just such an innovative tool. The technology influences how urban planners, architects and government officials plan for the future.

Singapore is one of the forward-thinking cities using the technology in innovative ways. A compact island state, Singapore faces numerous challenges as its population expands. The city-state's temperatures, for example, can be unbearably hot during certain times of year — but designing for improved wind flow throughout the city can help keep residents comfortable.

"Singapore has the vision to be a smart nation," says George Loh, programme director of the National Research Foundation of Singapore. "To be a smart nation [isn't] all about technology. It could be about the people; it could be processes. Technology does play a big role in making the nation, [and in] doing things in a more efficient way."

"Virtual Singapore," a project made possible by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, helps city planners test ideas that may ultimately make Singaporeans lives easier and more efficient. The software is collaborative: Data such as humidity, temperature and even noise and light intensity is collected and recorded, and government agencies can also input data to build a comprehensive 3D model of the city. This data creates vivid simulations that illuminate potential pain points for city dwellers.

Alexandre Parilusyan, the Vice-President, Business Transformation in Asia Pacific South for Dassault Systèmes, explains that virtual technologies have been used for years by industries like the aerospace and automotive markets — but now that they're coming to cities, they're opening a veritable world of possibilities.

As software such as the 3DEXPERIENCE platform becomes more advanced and more widely available, it will prove useful not only to urban planners and engineers, but also to business owners and even residents themselves.

"Virtual Singapore allows us to experience the city in a way that hasn’t been possible until now. With this platform, we are shaping the future," says Parilusyan.
